ROCKS FROM SPACE! Gibeon is a meteorite that fell in prehistoric times in Namibia. It was named after the nearest town: Gibeon, Namibia. Skullis offers it now! Skullis has been looking for all the cool materials and stones. We noticed this very material is so HOT in all the gemstone fairs we attended worldwide. But it is not easy to find the source offering the rough stone. 1 month ago, we got it! When we got and manage it, we found that: 1) It is SO HEAVY. Take it in hand and you will find it is much heavier than similar sized skulls carved with any other stones. 2) it is SO HARD to carve, though its mohs scale hardness is only 4.5. Carving this skull took us 5 times the time we spend in carving a skull of the same size with a 7-Mohs-scale gemstones, say, rock crystal. It costs us much much more time in cutting, carving and grinding processes in making the skull with the very stone. This very beautiful and unusual meteorite was first found in 1836, although native inhabitants knew about it before then. Most specimens show flight markings and evidence of a violent atmospheric breakup. A beautiful fine octahedrite pattern when etched and is very resistant to rust because of the tight fitting crystals, lack of inclusions, and high nickel content. The Gibeon Meteorite structural classification is a Fine Octahedrite and is made up of approximately 90% iron, 8% nickel, 0.4% cobalt and 0.04% phosphorus. Minerals found in the Gibeon Meteorite include chromite, enstatite, taenite, deabreelite, and tridymite. The crystalline patterns found in Gibeon specimens are called Widmanstatten patterns and are unique to meteorites. Widmanstatten Patterns are one of the primary tools for meteorite identification. The Gibeon Meteorite is relatively stable and less susceptible to rusting, which make it an ideal material for jewelry and display. Most meteorite used in jewelry is the iron-nickel type from Gibeon. Very difficult material to cut and shape. Plus, the different Gibeon samples can vary greatly in quality and beauty. Some are gem quality and some are just junk.
